that is the Gimli Glider. wiki it for more info.
was watching this show about air crash investigations when i saw this.
this Air Canada flight 143 had crashed landed into Gimli ex-airforce base.
the reason behind the crash landing was because the plane ran out of fuel mid air.
this happened on 23 July 1983.
imagine gliding without power when you are about 12.5km above the ground,
scary right? and you need to do an emergency somewhere asap.
very interesting story i find.
yeah, the plane earned the name Gimli Glider cause the pilots glided the plane to the landing area,
he also did a forward slip.
forward slip is commonly used with gliders and light aircraft, either to lose height quickly or to execute a cross-wind landing.
go read up on it if your interested,
its interesting to know this kind of stuffs
